What not many people know is that the sports and lifestyle adidas brand was founded and is still based in a small town in German Bavaria. That’s where adidas’ founder Adolf “Adi” Dassler was born in 1900, and where he lived all his life. After Adi came back from World War I he decided to open his own shoe factory with his brother Rudolf: that is how adidas was founded in 1924. The brothers’ goal was to create top-notch sports shoes for athletes, especially football shoes with original metal spikes. Their models proved highly successful, and started getting a lot of attention after they sponsored Olympic athletes at the 1928 Olympics in Amsterdam. 8 years later, at the 1936 Olympics in Berlin, adidas was the first to sponsor an African American athlete, suppling Jesse Owens with running shoes. Owen’s exceptional performance (4 gold medals!) further contributed to the popularity of adidas as producer of running shoes.

In 1949, Adi decided to leave the company to pursue his own personal project, the company we now know as adidas. The name comes from the combination of Adolf’s nickname “Adi” and the first part of his surname “Dassler”, although some believe that adidas is an acronym for All Day I Dream About Sports. On the same day he founded adidas, Adi also registered the iconic 3-striped logo. The rest is history: from running shoes, to football shoes, to clothing, adidas has been scoring one success after another. Especially in football, adidas has managed to create and supply innovative football kits for major clubs worldwide, including national teams.

adidas has been introducing design innovations both in football boots and balls, creating products that were more effective, ergonomic and could guarantee better performances. In tennis, adidas is famous for sponsoring US tennis player Stan Smith in the 60s, whose collaboration with the adidas brand gave birth to the iconic Stan Smith shoe, which is not popular for tennis anymore, but is still loved for his timeless retro look.

The adidas brand is divided into three different groups of products, each with a different purpose and target customer: Adidas Performance, shoes and clothing designed and developed for professional athletes; Adidas Originals, for lifestyle shoes and clothing that stay true to the brand’s timeless classics; Style Essentials, which is more focused on fashion and includes the collaboration line Y-3 with designer Yohji Yamamoto.
